146th birth anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla observed

DHAKA, Oct 26, 2019 (BSS) – The 146th birth anniversary of national leader AK Fazlul Huq, popularly known as Sher-e-Bangla (Tiger of Bengal), was observed today.

On the occasion, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Professor Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman placed wreaths at the grave of the great leader and offered ziarat there. Ak Fazlul Huq’s grandson Faiazul Huq, teachers, students and staff members were present.

A discussion meeting was also held on the mazar premises under the auspices of Sher-e-Bangla Jatiya Smriti Sangsad and Bishwa Bangalee Sommelon.

Housing and Public Works Minister S M Rezaul Karim and DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman, among others, addressed the discussion with

Smriti Sangsad president Muhammad Abdul Khaleque in the chair.

According to Banglapedia, Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq, statesman, public leader and holder of many high political posts including those of the Mayor of Calcutta (1935), Chief Minister of undivided Bengal (1937-1943) and East Bengal (1954), Home Minister of Pakistan (1955) and Governor of East Pakistan(1956-58).

He was born on 26 October in 1873 at his maternal uncle’s house in Saturia village of former Bakerganj district, now Jhalakathi district, in Barishal division.
