DHAKA, Oct 25, 2019 (BSS) – Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said party leaders will be elected in the upcoming councils on the basis of their competency and no controversial person will be allowed in new committees.

“Those who believe in the politics of consumerism are not required in the Awami League,” he told the extended meeting of AL Dhaka South City Unit at its Bangabandhu Avenue Central Office in the capital.

Speaking as the chief guest, Quader, also minister for road transport and bridges, said Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina knows who should be picked as leaders of the organisation.

“No controversial person will get berth in the new committees of the party,” he said, adding the party cannot suffer for a few people.

He said the committees will be formed involving the dedicated senior and young leaders to infuse more dynamism into the party.

Inclusion of new leadership in a party expedite organisational activities, Quader said, adding power does not last forever and that is why the behaviours of the party leaders and activists must be decent and polite.

The image of the government could not be tarnished due to the indecent behaviours of any person, he said.

“People are the main source of AL’s strength. We assumed power by taking people’s mandate. BNP has lost public support due to its negative politics,” the AL general secretary said.

About city polls, he urged the city AL leaders and workers to work sincerely and get prepared so that AL nominated candidates can win in the next Chattogram and Dhaka city elections.

“To this end, workers meeting must be held at ward and thana levels,” Quader said.

About Nusrat murder case verdict, he said all the 16 accused were sentenced to death in the much-talked-about murder case and as a result, people’s trust in judiciary has increased.

During the reign of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said, nobody gets escaped after doing offences.

About the ongoing cleanliness drive, Quader said although it hurts the interest of anyone, the drive is being lauded across the country.

“Wrongdoers, even party men, are not getting spared during the drive…if any party man gets involved in wrongdoings, organisational and administrative actions are being taken against him or her,” he added.

The AL general secretary said there was no example of taking organisational and administrative action against BNP men during its reign. “BNP had turned the country into a haven for corruption through Hawa Bhaban,” he added.

Chaired by president of AL Dhaka South City Unit Abul Hasnat, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Dhaka South City mayor Sayeed Khokon and general secretary of AL Dhaka South City Unit Shahe Alam Murad.
