Upazila hospitals to get anti-venom: Maleque

DHAKA, Oct 24, 2019 (BSS)-Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque today said anti-venom, a medication which is used to treat certain venomous bites, will be provided to all upazila (UZ) health complexes very soon for recovery from snake bites.

“Currently, anti-venom is being provided to all district-level hospitals of the country but there is still a shortage of anti-venom at the upazila levels. Therefore, necessary arrangements will be made soon to provide anti-venom to all upazila hospitals,” he said.

The minister stated this while addressing a seminar on snake bite as the chief guest at Hotel Intercontinental in the city.

Non Communicable Disease Control Programme organized the seminar with its Line-Director Dr Nur Mohammad in the chair, said a press release.

“Every year, 6-7 thousand people are killed by venomous snake bites in the country. On average, at least 16 people die every day, Zahid said.

According to an estimate, the death rate of snake bite is one people in every one and an half hour, he added.

He hoped that the rate of death due to snake bite would be reduced following the initiative taken by the concerned ministry.

Director General of Health Service (DGHS) Director General Dr Abul Kalam Azad attended the seminar as the special guest.

DGHS Additional Director General Dr AHM Enayet Hussain, DGHS former Director General Professor Dr M A Faiz Former and other high officials concerned were present on the occasion.
