DHAKA, Oct 23, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered
authorities concerned to ensure to stop supply of fuel to vehicles without
updated fitness certificate.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder
and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order as Bangladesh Road Transport
Authority (BRTA) filed a report on renewing fitness certificates.
Moin Forazi and Rafiul Islam stood for BRTA, while Deputy Attorney
General AKM Amin Uddin Manik and Assistant Attorney General Helena Begum
China stood argued for the state.
“The court has ordered to stop supply of fuel for all the unfit vehicles
plying on the streets,” Advocate Forazi said.
BRTA in its report today said only 89,269 vehicles have renewed their
fitness certificates in two-month fixed by the court.
The High Court on July 23 ordered owners of unfit vehicles to renew
their fitness certificates from August 1 to September 30.
The High Court on June 24 directed BRTA to submit lists of vehicles and
drivers, whose fitness certificates and driving licenses haven’t been renewed
after those were expired.
Supreme Court lawyer advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub earlier drew court’s
attention towards a report of an English daily about the free movement of
unfit vehicles.
The court on March 27 issued a rule in this regard and had asked BRTA
director to appear before it on July 23 and gave explanation.
Following that order the BRTA director appeared before it and also two
reports, one from BRTA and another from police, were submitted.
The court on June 24 also asked BRTA to let court know in a month the
steps they have taken so far against unfit vehicles and date-expired license
holders.
