JOYPURHAT, Oct 22, 2019 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced seven
persons to death for killing a woman after rape in Akkelpur upazila of the
district in 2016.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge ABM Mahmudul
Haque delivered the verdict, the tribunal sources said.
The convicts are Sohel Talukdar, Afzal Hossain, Rahm alias Rahin,
Ferdous Alam Sakhidar, Mojibar Rahman, Ruhul Amin and Azizar Rahman. All are
inhabitants of Akkelpur upazila of the district.
The court also fined convicts Sohel and Ferdous Taka 5 lakh each and
others Taka 1 lakh each.
According to prosecution, the convicts picked up Aroti Rani, wife of
Ujjal Mahanta, a resident of a Dewra shelter centre, and raped her on October
8, 2016.
The criminals fled the scene after leaving the victim in critical
condition. Later, she was rushed to Adamdighi Hospital, where doctors
declared her dead.
Ujjal Mahanta filed a case with Akkelpur Police Station accusing the
seven people.
After examining 21 witnesses and evidences, the Judge handed down the
judgment.
