Four to die for murder

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 21, 2019 (BSS) – A Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial
Tribunal today awarded death penalty to four people, while two others were
given life term imprisonment for murdering a trader Ranzon Chowdhury at
Hathazari upazila of the district in 2008.

Acting Judge of the Speedy Tribunal Mohammad Abdul Halim pronounced the
verdict after examining records and witness depositions.

Public Prosecutor of the Tribunal and General Secretary of Chattogram
District Bar Association Mohammad Ayub Khan told BSS that those convicted
were sentenced to capital punishment are Abdul Quader, Mohammad Mohsin, Emran
and Forkan.

Besides, the court convicted Abdul Monaf and Shahadat to life term
imprisonment in the same case.

The case was transferred from the Judge’s Court to Divisional Tribunal on
October 2017. The tribunal also fined them Taka two lakh each for the same
crime in default to suffer another year in prison.

The prosecution story in brief is that Ranzon Chowdhury, a trader of
Hathazari was chopped to death by the accused on May 8, 2018 over previous
enmity. His body was hidden in a pond at Asadnagar village under Hathazari
upazila after the killing.

Victim’s wife Smrity Rani Chandra filed a case against the accused with
Hathazari Thana in this connection.

Police submitted charge sheet against the six accused on March 25 in 2009.
After examining nine prosecution witnesses out of 16, the court pronounced
the judgment.
