GAIBANDHA, Oct 17, 2019 (BSS) – The World Food Day-2019 was observed in
the district on Wednesday as elsewhere in the country and the globe with a
call to achieve food security for the people through increasing production of
healthy diets.

This year’s theme of the day is “our actions are our future-healthy diets
for zero hunger world.”

Marking the day, the department of food and department of agriculture
extension (DAE) chalked out the elaborate programmes in cooperation with
district administration.

In the morning, a rally led by deputy commissioner (DC) was brought out
from the premises of District Collectorate Building here and ended at the
same venue after parading the main roads of the town.

Later, a discussion meeting was held at the conference room of the DC here
on the significance of the day with deputy director (DD) of DAE Dr. SM
Ferdous in the chair.

DC Abdul Matin addressed the meeting as the chief guest and district
controller of food Jahirul Islam was present at the event as the special
guest.

District training officer of DAE Showkat Osman and journalists Sarker M.
Shahiduzzaman and Abedur Rahman Swapon addressed the meeting, among others.

The speakers in their speeches said the world food day is significant as
it is being dedicated to the effort on how to achieve the food security for
the huge number of people across the globe.

Different unhealthy foods are being included in our daily diets and these
are creating health related complexities among the people including the
innocent children due to consumption, they also said.

They also stressed the need for avoiding consumption of unhealthy and
adulterated food as unscrupulous food suppliers use various colorful
chemicals in the food items to attract the consumers which are harmful for
the human body.

DC Abdul Matin in his speeches said the government led by Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly to ensure safe and nutritious
food for the people of the country since 2009.

The country has been self-sufficient in food production for taking
uninterrupted efforts by the government and the number of poor and extreme
poor has been significantly declining, the DC added.

DD of DAE Dr. SM Ferdous in the concluding speeches said it is very
essential to ensure nutrition security along with achieving food security and
to end this, the officials of the DAE are working seriously and sincerely.

A large number of people including govt. officials and employees of the
food department and the DAE and journalists of print and electronic media
took part in the programmes.
