Int’l Day for Rural Women celebrated in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Oct 16, 2019 (BSS) – The International Day of Rural Women was
celebrated in the district on Tuesday as elsewhere in the country and the
globe in a befitting manner.

This year’s theme of the day was “Rural Women and Girls Building Climate
Resilience”.

Marking the day, SKS Foundation, a non-government organization, chalked out
the different programmes under Action for Socio-Economic Security and Rights
for Excluded and Marginalized Women and Girls funded by Manusher Jonno
Foundation, sources said.

In the morning, a rally led by Sadar UNO Uttam Kumar Roy was brought out
from the Sadar upazila parishad premises and ended at the same venue after
parading main roads of the district town.

Later, a discussion meeting on the significance of the day was also held at
the hall room of the upazila parishad.

UNO Uttam Kumar Roy addressed the function as the chief guest and upazila
health and family planning officer Dr. Abu Mohammad Al-Mamun, upazila youth
development officer Nazmul Hasan and chairman of Boali union parishad A.M
Mazed Uddin Khan were present at the event as the special guest.

Moderated by project manager Most. Lovely Khatun, the function was also
addressed, among others, by members of women group Sathi Akter, Maya Akter
and Nasrin Begum.

UNO Uttam Kumar Roy in his speeches said rural women and girls are playing
a significant role in agriculture, food security and nutrition, land and
natural resource management and unpaid and domestic care work.

In fact, globally, one in three employed women works in agriculture and
women collect biomass fuels, and manually process foodstuffs; he said adding
that eighty percent of households rely on women and girls.

In this context, the UNO underscored the need for evaluating the works and
the contributions of rural women and girls in local and national levels.

The members of the women groups presented their 10-point demands like
taking the voices of the rural women to national level, taking necessary
measures to remove violence on the women, upholding the women contribution to
national level through publicity, increasing land fertility using organic
fertilizers and keeping navigability of the river up through dredging for its
quick implementation.

The day was also celebrated in Gobindaganj and Shaghata upazilas of the
district at the arrangement of the project.

A large number of people including members of the groups, NGO activists and
media men participated in the programmes.
