Late goal denies Bangladesh’s triumph in FIFA WC Qualifier

DHAKA, Oct 14, 2019 (BSS) – A late goal from Adil Khan denied Bangladesh’s certain victory as Bangladesh played out to a 1-1 goal draw with host India in their away Group E match of FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar Qualifiers round-2 held today at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Salt Lake, Kolkata.

It was much improved performance by the Jamie Day’s side in the jumped pack stadium following their outstanding performance against Qatar in home.

In the day’s match, striker Saad Uddin gave Bangladesh a deserving lead in the 41st minute with a brilliant header after capitalizing on a free kick by skipper Jamal Bhuyan.

Bangladesh created several chances in the second half. The boys in red and green hit the post as India’s Adil Khan saved a chip from Jibon from the goal-line in the 72nd minute.

However the men in blue restored the parity it in the 88th minute with defender Adil scored from a header following a corner to denied Bangladesh’s victory n the match.

Earlier, Bangladesh lost to Afghanistan by a lone goal in their qualifying opener.

Bangladesh played eight World Cup qualifying campaigns after the 1986 World Cup, but their best result remained from 1985 when they beat Thailand and Indonesia in Dhaka. However Bangladesh failed to conquer the group’s other opponent, India, who twice beat Bangladesh 2-1.

Both Bangladesh and India last played qualifiers at the newly-built Salt Lake Stadium for the Mexico World Cup backed in 1985.

Earlier, India put a gritty performance against an attacking Qatar, to hold the reigning Asian champions to a goalless draw and earn their first point of the qualifiers after suffering a heartbreaking 1-2 loss in the opening match against Oman.
