Momen terms diplomats comments over Abrar murder ‘out of norms’

DHAKA, Oct 15, 2019 (BSS) – Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen today heavily came down on some

diplomats from the UN and some western countries for their comments over Abrar murder terming

those as unnecessary and beyond diplomatic norms.

“The UN never issued a single statement over mass shooting in USA schools whereas there was

an accident (Abrar Murder) in Bangladesh and the government took prompt strong action … I

think they (diplomats) went beyond their norms,” he told a small group of reporters at foreign

ministry here today.

Abrar Fahad, a second year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of

BUET, was beaten to death inside the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of

October 7. Police have so far arrested 19 persons in connection with the murder.

After the incident the UN Dhaka office issued a statement while missions of the USA, the UK,

Germany and Switzerland here made comments condemning the murder and urged transparent

investigation.

Referring to recent shooting at New York City’s Brooklyn that claimed four lives, the foreign

minister said police there even failed to arrest anyone in connection with the killing, but no

one issued such statements.

Momen also referred to the mosque shootings in New Zealand that left 51 lives of worshipers

and said Bangladesh had expressed their grief about the tragic incident but never blamed that

there was lack of good governance or security measures by the New Zealand government.

“But there is a tendency of blaming here (in Bangladesh). I think they (diplomats) should

stop it,” he said.

From day one, the foreign minister mentioned that the Bangladesh government is saying that

persons involved in Abrar murder will be given the highest punishment.
