225 urban poor households get livelihood support in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Oct 14, 2019 (BSS) – Some 225 urban poor and underprivileged
households were given livelihood support including sewing machine for
improving their living and livelihood condition after the best uses of the
income-generating supports.

Non-government organisation Brac under its ‘Urban Development Programme
(UDP)’ donated the stuffs at a simple ceremony at the conference hall of
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) today.

On the occasion, 500 other slum people were given seeds of various
agricultural crops and vegetables so that they can elevate their socio-
economic condition through boosting homestead crops and vegetables.

City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and its Ward Councilor Md Kamruzzaman
attended and addressed the distribution ceremony as the chief and special
guests respectively with Chief Revenue Officer Shahana Akhter Jahan in the
chair.

In her welcome speech, Regional Coordinator of UDP Farzana Parveen
illustrated objectives of the project and its activities and implementation
strategy on the occasion.

Brac has been implementing the project in association with RCC to engage
multi-sectoral partners to create employment opportunities for the urban poor
people and improve their living and livelihood conditions and realise basic
rights.

She said around 70,000 populations from 18,400 households living in
different slum areas in the city will get scopes of improving their living
and livelihood conditions through availing different facilities from the UDP
in phases.

The project is intended to ensure safe drinking water, sanitation, housing
and education facilities to the slum dwellers for improving their living and
livelihood conditions, she informed.
