138 fishermen families get VGF rice in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Oct 12, 2019 (BSS) – A total of 138 fishermen families in
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) area received food grains of special
vulnerable group feeding (VGF) programme here today.

The fishermen families were brought under the VGF programme as they
refrained from fishing mother Hilsha fish in the river Padma.

RCC authorities distributed 20 kilograms of rice among each of the
beneficiary families at City Bhaban conference hall.

Panel Mayor Rajab Ali, Chief Executive Officer Shawgatul Alam, Secretary
Abu Hayat Rahmatullah, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Aminul
Haque, District Fisheries Officer Alok Kumar Shaha and Senior Upazila
Fisheries Officer Abu Bakker Siddique were present on the occasion.

District Fisheries Officer Alok Kumar Shaha said a total of 1,800
fishermen families were brought under special VGF programme as they abstained
from fishing Hilsha fish in the river Padma in different upazilas in the
district.

Beneficiary families received 20 kilograms of rice during the mother
hilsha fish conservation period from October 9 to 30.

He said the government has taken special initiative to make the drive of
conserving mother hilsha fish successful. Besides, the authorities will
conduct drives in Padma River to conserve Hilsa fish.

Alok Shaha said there is legal provision for one to two years jail against
the law breakers during the ban period.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Aminul Haque said 36 metric
tons of rice was allocated for the programme.

Under the programme, 11.58 tonnes of rice have been allocated for 579
fishermen in Godagari Upazila, 9.86 tonnes for 493 fishermen in Paba Upazila,
6.22 tonnes for 311 fishermen in Bagha Upazila, 5.58 tonnes for 279 fishermen
in Charghat Upazila and 2.76 tonnes for 20 fishermen in Rajshahi City
Corporation area.

Aminul Haque added that distribution of the rice has already been started
everywhere in the district and the distribution process will be complete by
October 15.
