World Mental Health day observed

DHAKA, Oct 10, 2019 (BSS) – The ‘World Mental Health Day’ was observed in the county as elsewhere in the globe today in a befitting manner with the objective of raising awareness of mental health issues.

Different social, medical, educational organizations chalked out elaborate programmes marking the day.

This year’s theme of the World Mental Health Day was ‘Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention’.

The Women and Children Affairs Ministry today arranged a seminar on ‘Promoting Mental Health and Preventing Suicide’.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatunnesa Indira addressed as the chief guest the seminar.

To mark the day, a colorful rally led by the Vice Chancellor Professor Kanak Kanti Barua, was bought out from the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) premises.

Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Md. Shahidullah Sikder, chairman of Psychiatry Prof MMA Salauddin Kaiser and teachers, doctors and resident students of the university also joined the rally.

Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated a daylong workshop on its premises to mark the day.

State minister for information Md Murad Hossain delivered the inauguration speech in the programme arranged by the Bangladesh Psychiatrists Association (BPA) at TSC.

The programme was presided over by the chairperson of Psychology Department Dr Mahfuza Khanam, while BPA chairman Dr Muhammad Mahmudur Rahman presented an article on ‘Preventing Suicides’.

Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) bought out a rally led by its Commandant Major General Md Mostafizur Rahman.

Followed by the rally, a discussion was held with the Director General of Medical Services Major General Fasiur Rahman as the chief guest.

Meetings to create awareness among the prisoners under the project- ‘Improvement of the real situation of overcrowding in prisons in Bangladesh (IRSOP)’ by the Health Sector of Dhaka Ahsania Mission were held in Dhaka Central Jail, Keraniganj and Kashimpur Jail.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion.

The World Mental Health Day is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.

It was first observed in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with 150 member countries.
