Govt orders renovation of faulty RMG factory buildings

DHAKA, Oct 10, 2019 (BSS) – The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments under the Ministry of Labour and Employment has instructed the readymade garment (RMG) factory owners to renovate their faulty factory buildings within the shortest possible time.

The department came up with the instruction in a two-day meeting with the owners of 323 RMG factories of Dhaka, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Mymensingh and Tangail districts at its head office here on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the meeting, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) gave the faulty factories a specific timeframe for renovating their faulty buildings, a press release said today.

The department and BGMEA also warned the factory owners that if they do not repair their factories within the given timeframe, stern actions will be taken against them.

Speaking at the meeting on Wednesday, Labour and Employment Secretary KM Ali Azam said: “We are cordially asking the owners to repair their faulty factory buildings. The government never wants to shut down any factory…but the factories must be environment-friendly”.

Noting that workers’ safety and sound health must be ensured in the RMG factories and the government will provide all-out support to the owners in this regard, he warned: “We would not tolerate any kind of irregularity regarding the workers’ safety”.
