Integrity in NGO activities stressed for sustainable development

RANGPUR, Oct 10, 2019 (BSS) – Enhancing integrity in NGO activities along
with ensuring better GO-NGO coordination are crucial for ensuring successful
implementation of uplift activities to attain the sustainable development
goals (SDGs).

The views were expressed at a meeting of the Upazila NGO Coordination
Committee organised by Kawnia upazila administration at its conference room
in the upazila town here on Wednesday afternoon.

Presided over by Kawnia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ulfat Ara Begum,
executives of different NGOs conducting development and service delivery
activities in the upazila, civil society members and local journalists
participated in the event.

Junior Consultant (Surgery) of Kawnia Upazila Health Complex Dr. Khondker
Mominul Islam, representatives Abdur Rahman of RDRS Bangladesh, Uday Dewan of
Islamic Relief, Rezaul Karim of Leprosy Mission and Irene Akhter of the Asia
Foundation addressed.

The UNO discussed objectives of arranging the meeting aiming at properly
implementing the government’s integrity strategies to establish transparency
and accountability in NGO activities.

She narrated tremendous successes already achieved by different NGOs in all
sectors of development for backward, poor and distressed people in Kawnia
upazila like elsewhere in the country.

She specially stressed on ensuring proper selection of beneficiaries,
coordination and transparency to overcome the tendency of avoiding prevailing
rules in conducting activities by some NGOs damaging image of other NGOs
working with reputation.

The participating NGO representatives expressed their firm commitment to
bring more transparency in their activities and ensure better coordination to
avoid overlapping problem and ensure reaching services to backward people for
their development.

Dr. Islam stressed on expanded GO-NGO collaboration to reach public
services to backward people, enhance women participation in decision-making
process and create more income generation scopes for them to speed up rural
development.

“The NGOs should maintain better coordination and work with local
administration and local government bodies to ensure smooth development of
socially backward people for attaining the SDGs by 2030,” he added.
