Rangpur-3 by-poll ends peacefully

RANGPUR, Oct 5, 2019 (BSS) – The by-poll in Rangpur-3 parliamentary
constituency ended peacefully at 5pm today amid pleasant weather condition
and four-tier security measures.

“The voting started at 9am using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in all
175 polling centres and continued without any untoward incident till 5pm,”
Regional Election Officer and Returning Officer (RO) for Rangpur-3 by-poll GM
Sahatab Uddin told BSS at 5:05pm.

Counting of votes is being conducted by the election officials at all
polling centres across the Rangpur-3 parliamentary constituency in presence
of polling agents of all six contesting candidates.

“Election officials at Police Hall control room in the city are collecting
results from presiding officers,” the RO said, adding that unofficial results
of the by-poll will be announced there in presence of contesting candidates,
their representatives and journalists.

“Though presence of voters in the queues was thinner at all 1,023 booths
in 175 polling centres in the morning, the scene started changing after 11:30
am at many polling centres,” the RO said.

Talking to BSS, Presiding Officers at different polling centres in the
city as well as rural areas of Rangpur-3 seat said that polling continued
peacefully amid tight security measures.

Six candidates are contesting in the by-poll in Rangpur-3 seat that became
vacant following death of Leader of the Opposition in the Jatiya Sangshad and
JaPa Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad on July 14.

The candidates contesting in the by-poll are: Jatiya Party (JaPa)-nominated
Rahgir Al Mahi Saad Ershad (Plough), BNP-nominated candidate Rita Rahman
(Sheaf of paddy), independent candidate Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif (Motor
Car), National People Party-nominated candidate Shafiul Alam (Mango), Gano
Front-nominated candidate Muhammad Shahidullah (Fish) and Khelafat Majlish-
nominated candidate Tauhidur Rahman Mandal Raju (Wall Clock).

“The total number of voters in the constituency is four lakh 41 thousand
and 224 voters — two lakh 20 thousand and 823 are males while two lakh 20
thousand 401 females.” the RO said.

A total of 3,244 election officials, including 175 Presiding Officers,
1,023 Assistant Presiding Officers and 2,046 Polling Officers were involved
in conducting the voting process in the by-poll, he added.

Eighteen executive magistrates, four judicial magistrates and one mobile
election tribunal led by judicial magistrate worked round the clock to ensure
peaceful law and order, enforce election rules and prevention of crimes in
Rangpur-3 seat.

Besides, more than 3,000 members of police and Ansar-VDP, 20 roving teams
of Rapid Action Battalion, 18 platoons of BGB and members of intelligence
agencies were deployed to ensure security at all booths for peaceful by-
election, the RO added.
