One killed, 18 injured in Rangpur train accident

RANGPUR, Oct 03, 2019 (BSS) – One person was killed and 18 others were injured in a train accident at Kawnia Railway Junction in Kawnia upazila of the district this afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Apel Mahmud, 21, a student of Gaibandha Community Nursing College in Gaibandha district town.

Police and firefighters said the accident occurred when driver of Panchagarh-bound ‘Uttarbanga Seven-up Mail Train’ from Santahar detached the locomotive from the bogies for changing its direction after reaching Kawnia Railway Junction around 4:30 pm.

“The locomotive hit two standing bogies of the train while changing its direction in which both the bogies were badly damaged killing one person on the spot and injuring 18 others,” Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kawnia Thana Azizul Islam told BSS.

Kawnia Thana police, fire service and civil defence personnel from Rangpur and Kawnia stations and rescue train from Lalmonirhat Division of Bangladesh Railway with officials concerned rushed there and started salvage operation.

Confirming recovery of one body from the spot, Deputy Director of Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Md. Shamsuzzoha said five to six injured passengers were seriously injured in the train accident.

Kawnia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ulfat Ara Begum, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Jasmine Nahar, Physician of Lalmonirhat BR Division Dr. Anisul Haque, Kawnia Station Master of BR Abdur Rashid visited the spot.
