Govt attaches priority to safety net programmes for distressed

RAJSHAHI, Oct 3, 2019 (BSS) – The government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has attached top priority for successful implementation of social safety net programmes for the distressed people.

The safety net programmes were furthermore expanded to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). So, all kinds of non-coordination, laps and gaps must be removed on an urgent basis.

The observation came at a meeting of cheque distribution among the voluntary organizations, distressed people and patients sufferings from various chronic diseases here today.

Department of Social Services (DSS) under its National Social Welfare Council (NCWC) provided the financial support for welfare of the poor and distressed people.

Local DSS office organized the programme at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) office here. Chaired by DSS Divisional Director AKM Sorwar Jahan, the meeting was addressed, among others, by DC Hamidul Haque, NCWC Member Mozammel Haque, DSS Deputy Director Rashedul Kabir and Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat. On the occasion, 25 children suffering from neuron developmental disorder got support worth Taka 12.50 lakh for their treatment, 25 volunteer organizations Taka 12.26 lakh for distribution among disadvantaged people and 17 underprivileged persons Taka 93,000.

Hamidul Haque said the present government has taken many steps for the welfare of the poor and underprivileged people to help them passing their days easily.

“Considering their vulnerable condition, the government has launched allowance programme for them,” he said.

The beneficiaries have been getting their allowance timely through their own bank accounts, he added.

The safety net programmes can play a vital role in eradicating poverty by ensuring its proper planning, effective implementing policy, proper coordination and transparency and accountability, the DC said.
