DHAKA, Oct 2, 2019 (BSS) – Zia Choudhury has been appointed as the UN
Resident Coordinator in Botswana.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Choudhury as
the UN Resident Coordinator in Botswana, with the host government’s approval,
according to a UN webpost released yesterday.

With 25 years of experience in development and humanitarian work,
Choudhury was involved primarily in NGO leadership positions as well as
agricultural research, humanitarian policy and consulting roles in the United
Nations system – with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the
Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Choudhury began his development career as a national field officer in a
disaster-prone island in the Bay of Bengal and has worked in coordination and
leadership roles across Africa, Asia and Europe.

His most recent postings have been as CARE International Country Director
in Sudan and Bangladesh.

“As a Bangladeshi, it will be such an honour and privilege to serve as UN
Resident Coordinator in Botswana,” Choudhury said while expressing his
reaction to the appointment.

“On this occasion, I would like to thank the government of Bangladesh,
particularly officials from the NGO Affairs Bureau under the Prime Minister’s
Office (PMO). They have extended support and cooperation that enabled CARE to
reach out millions with development and humanitarian programme. I wish my
fellow Bangladeshis and the government every success in their drive to
achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said in a press release
issued by CARE today.
