EU to help repatriate Rohingyas to Myanmar; hopes Kamal

DHAKA, Sep 30, 2019 (BSS) – Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal today hoped that the European Union would play a strong role towards repatriation of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar as they believe that the homeland of Rohingyas is in the Rakhine State.

The Finance Minister expressed such hope after Ambassador of European Union to Bangladesh Rensje Teerink met him at his ERD office this afternoon, said a ministry press release.

Kamal said that the EU would continue to work so that the Rohingyas could go back to Myanmar.

Turning to the implementation of mega projects, he said projects like the Padma Bridge, the Karnaphuli Tunnel, and the Metro Rail are the dreams of the country and those are about to be materialized.

“When these projects would be completed, then our GDP growth would get a boost and only the completed Padma Bridge would enhance our GDP growth by one percent,” Kamal said adding that the government is also working to increase the employments in the country side by side with strengthening knowledge-based education operations.

The Finance Minister renewed his optimism that the GDP growth rate in the current fiscal year (FY20) would reach to 8.25 to 8.30 percent while it would reach into double digit by 2024.

He said in the global trade, Bangladesh’s is the 42nd exporting country while it is the 30th largest country regarding imports.

“So, there is a very bright prospect for making investment in Bangladesh capitalizing its best investment-friendly environment and attractive stimulus prevailing among the South Asian countries,” Kamal said.

Answering to a question, the Finance Minister said the government is trying to minimize the deviations and wastages in the implementation of the development projects as it does not have past experience of implementing mega projects.

“But, we’re trying our best so that it (deviations and wastage) remains less and does not cross the limit…..Our Prime Minister is also trying so that it does not cross the limit,” he added.
