Villagers to get free, fair and neutral election in Rajshahi: EC Rafique

RAJSHAHI, Sept 30, 2019 (BSS)- Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam has given assurance of holding the forthcoming Union Parishad (UP) election free, fair and neutral manner.

He said the Election Commission will work in a proper coordination with local administration and law-enforcing agencies so that the voters can cast their votes in congenial atmosphere and return to their respective residences safely.

Rafiqul Islam made the assertion while addressing a view-sharing meeting with contesting candidates and administrative and law-enforcing agency officials at Bagha Upazila Parishad Hall Room in the district yesterday afternoon as chief guest.

Election to four UPs namely Bazubagha, Gargari, Monigram and Pakuria under the Bagha Upazila will be held on October 14 after a long gap of 17 years.

Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam asked the administrative officials and law-enforcers to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty to make the local body elections successful and meaningful.

He mentioned ensuring and maintaining peaceful situation is very important for making the election free, fair and credible.

Upazila Election Officer Mujibul Haque told the meeting that 19 candidates for four chairmen and 63 candidates for the women reserved seats and 170 for the general members are contesting in the elections. A total of 62,000 voters will cast their votes, he added.

Regional Election Officer Faridul Islam, Senior District Election Officer Saidul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police Mahmud Hassan and Assistant Superintendent of Police Jamil Ahmed also addressed the meeting with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahin Reja in the chair.
