461 upazilas to get electricity by Mujib Year

DHAKA, Sept 29, 2019 (BSS) – With a view to supplying electricity to every house of the country, the government is working relentlessly to bring all 461 upazilas under 100 percent electricity coverage within Mujib Year.

“Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the 100 percent electrification for 211 upazilas,” Director (Public Relations) of Bangladesh Rural Electricity Board (BREB) Md Anwar Hossain told BSS here today.

He said some 130 upazilas were ready for formal opening by the Prime Minister, adding, “Efforts were underway to bring the remaining 120 upazilas under 100 percent electrification by March 17, 2020.”

According to a BREB official, the BREB has maintained 2.72 crore consumers across the country and the subscribers for electricity rose to 3.48 crore. The electric power consumption rose to 510 (kWh per capita).

The BREB has been implementing 100 percent electrification steps under separate projects.

Talking to BSS, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said that as high as 94 percent people of the country are now getting electricity from 47 percent in 2009 and the generation capacity has already been raised to 22,329 MW from 4,942 MW in 2009.

Highlighting the time-befitting directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to make the country self-reliant in power production, he said every upazila would come under hundred-percent electricity coverage by the Mujib Year in 2020.

Besides, the Awami League in their manifesto announced and said the GDP growth will increased to 10 percent in the next five years.

Bangladesh will be a middle income country in 2021, the year when the golden jubilee of the country will be celebrated.

Electricity will be ensured for all by 2020 and by 2023, the power generation capacity will be 28,000 MW and 5,000 CFT LNG supply will be ensured.

Meanwhile, with the government’s sincere efforts Bangladesh has achieved the fastest growth rate of installing solar home systems in the world, at a rate of 70,000 systems every month. Over 3 million systems have already been installed with support from development partners.

Nasrul said the government, led by under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is working sincerely to make the country a ‘Sonar Bangla’ dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
