Every mother deserve rights of safe motherhood: experts

RAJSHAHI, May 29, 2018 (BSS) – As every women deserves the right of
motherhood every mother has the right of safe motherhood and there is no
alternative to it.

The present government has launched midwife service for ensuring safe
motherhood and has been putting in its level best efforts so that every
mother can delivery with the help of a skilled birth attendant.

The observation came at an outstation Betar Dialogue at Jafar Imam Tennis
Complex auditorium in the city yesterday.

Local center of Bangladesh Betar organized the dialogue under its
Communication Programme in Development of Children and Women to mark the
International Safe Motherhood Day. “Midwife is essential to reduce maternal
mortality” was the main theme of the discussion.

Professor Dr Shahela Jeshmin, Head of Department of Gynecology and
Obstetrics of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, addressed the programme as
focal person.

Regional Director of Bangladesh Betar Towhida Chowdhury, Divisional Deputy
Director of Directorate of Health Services Dr Gopendra Nath Acharya, Project
Director of Surjer Hashi Clinic Abjalur Rashid and Medical Officer of Mother
and Baby Clinic Tahsina Shamim also spoke.

Professor Shahela Jeshmin told the meeting that 5,110 mother die during
delivery every year in the country. Still, 58 percent delivery is done in
home in Bangladesh. Delivery must be done through skilled birth attendant for
substantial and sustainable reduction of maternal mortality.

She says the present government with dynamic leadership of Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly to achieve the sustainable
development goals.

The government has taken initiative for providing emergency maternity
service for reducing child and maternal mortality rates, midwifery training
and appointment are given in different health complexes.

“Cost-free maternal and neonatal healthcare services are also being
delivered from the community clinics and Mother Health Voucher Scheme to the
poor women before and after their pregnancy for ensuring safe motherhood,”
she said.

Dr Jeshmin, however, underscored the need for ensuring antenatal, postnatal
and emergency obstetrics care to all the pregnant mothers for safe motherhood
towards reducing maternal and infant mortality.
