87th death anniversary of Pritilata observed in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 24, 2019 (BSS) – The 87th death anniversary of Pritilata
Waddedar, the first woman who embraced martyrdom for the country’s liberation
from British rule in 1932, was observed today with due respect.

To mark the day, different organizations chalked out various programmes
including placing wreaths on the portrait of Pritilata, candle lighting and
discussion.

Birkannya Pritilata Trust (BPT) placed wreaths at the portrait of
Pritilata on the premises of Pritilata Complex Auditorium at Dhalghat village
under Patiya upazila, the birth place of the revolutionary nationalist woman.

Besides, leaders of Shamajtantrik Mohila Forum (SMF), Shamajtantrik
Chhatra Front (SCF) and Chattogram chapter of Charon Sangskritik Kendra,
Mostafa Hakim College also placed wreaths at the bust of Pritilata at
European Club, now Pahartali Divisional Railway Office, this morning.

Pritilata Hall of Chattogram University observed the day through
discussion meeting, lighting candle, and placing of wreaths on the portrait
of the legendary woman revolutionary.

Meanwhile, a discussion meeting was held at Pritilata Complex this
afternoon. Founder president of the Pritilata Trust Pankaj Chakrabarti
presided over the function while acting deputy commissioner Yesmin Parvin
Tirmiji, addressed the function as chief guest.

Habibul Hasan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Patiya, local elites, among
others, addressed the function as special guests.

Born in Chattogram in 1911, Pritilata was an anti-British revolutionary in
the then East Bengal, now Bangladesh.

Pritilata graduated in Philosophy with distinction from Bethune College of
Kolkata.

In early 1930s, Pritilata joined Mastarda Surya Sen’s armed resistance
movement.

Later in 1932, she successfully led a team to attack on the Pahartali
European Club in Chattogram. However, when trapped by the English on the
fateful night, she committed suicide by swallowing Cyanide, ending her short
endeavor in fighting for the country’s freedom.
