Awareness on hygienic sanitation among adolescents stressed

RANGPUR, Sept 24, 2019 (BSS) – Comprehensive efforts of all concerned have
become crucial to create awareness on hygienic menstrual sanitation among
adolescent girls and female students to attain the sustainable development
goals.

To attain the goals, authorities of the secondary level educational
institutions should take responsibility to educate female students and
provide them necessary facilities for ensuring menstrual hygiene management
at their institutions.

Public representatives and officials today expressed the onion at a
sanitary napkin distribution function held at Kadamtolee Dakhil Madrasha in
Haridebpur union of Sadar upazila in the district.

Sadar upazila parishad organised the event for distribution of sanitary
napkins among 400 female students of the madrasha free of costs with
financial assistance under the annual development program for the 2018-2019
FY.

Sadar Upazila Charmin Nasima Zaman Boby attended the function and
distributed sanitary napkins as the chief guest with Upazila Nirbahi Officer
(UNO) Ishraat Sadiya Sumi in the chair.

Chairman of Haridebpur union Iqbal Hossain and Superintendent of Kadamtolee
Dakhil Madrasha Md. Abdul Jalil addressed as special guests.

The speakers stressed on improving hygienic menstrual, sanitation and pure
drinking water facilities in all secondary level educational institutions
also to increase presence of female students in classrooms.

The chief guest said many teenage female students had been remaining absent
from classrooms for three days averagely every month, using old clothes and
not changing those in educational institutions during menstruation periods
even a decade ago.

“However, most of the female students now use sanitary pads, change those
at hygienic sanitary latrines and believe that there are enough space, light
and places for leaving their used pads in their educational institutions,”
she added.

The UNO called upon teachers, guardians and members of school and madrasha
managing committees for ensuring necessary facilities for menstrual hygiene
management of female students in all educational institutions.
