DHAKA, Sept 24, 2019 (BSS)- The United Nations (UN) and the World Bank (WB) have expressed their keenness to jointly work for road safety and prevention of road accidents in Bangladesh, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader here today.

He said the ministry will soon take necessary preparations, including formulation of projects.

The minister disclosed this to journalists after a view-exchange meeting with an eight-member delegation led by UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Road Safety Jean Todt at his office at the secretariat. World Bank Vice President for the South Asia Region Hartwig Schafer was present on the occasion.

Quader, also Awami League general secretary, said the WB will finance for upgrading 160-kilometer highway to four-lane from Jhenaidah to Bhomra in Satkhira via Jashore.

He said 100-kilometer highway from Hatikumrul to Jhenaidah will be upgraded to four-lane with the funding of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

The minister said WB’s road safety affairs cell is working on the 111-point recommendation given by the committee formed to ensure road safety and bring discipline in transport sector.

He said the UN and the WB want to show visible changes in road safety within the next three years by implementing projects with their own finance.

Earlier, a four-member delegation led by Democracy International Chief of Party Katie Croake met the minister.
