DHAKA, Sept 23, 2019 (BSS) – The National Identity Registration Wing of the
Election Commission (EC) has identified 15 EC officials involved in issuing
NID cards to Rohingya people who fled from Myanmar.
“We have specific data over how many officials were involved. We’re not
disclosing their names for the sake of investigation. But, the number is not
more than 15,” Director General of the EC’s National Identity Registration
Wing Brig Gen Saidul Islam told a press briefing at his office here today.
He said the National Identity Registration Wing has launched an integrity
drive against corruption and irregularities and it will do everything
necessary to protect NID database.
Meanwhile, Saidul said over a dozen of suspects were brought under
surveillance following the preliminary findings of two probe bodies.
Apart from taking legal actions against the people involved in NID
forgery, he said the EC will seek cooperation from the Anti-Corruption
Commission (ACC) and intelligence agencies, including the Anti-Counter
Terrorism Unit, Crime Investigation Department (CID) and Special Branch (SB),
aiming to detain the gang of fraudsters.
The NID Wing director general said: “Our main database is protected. Those
who wanted enter the NID database failed to do so. The IT unit of the EC has
already identified them. Nobody will be spared.”
“We’ve so far got a list of 61 Rohingyas who tried to be voters. We’ve
examining their information that how they could make the efforts and who
assisted them. Action will be taken against those involved in this regard,”
he warned.
Noting that the people, who were involved in issuing NID cards in the past,
are being also brought under the EC scanner, Saidul said the Commission
prepared a list of the officials who were sacked because of their involvement
in wrongdoing since 2008 and sent the list to different offices.
“The EC officials have been asked to remain alert so that the sacked
officials cannot get work as data entry operators on temporary basis,” he
added.
The NID Wing chief said no Rohingya will be able to be a voter, while the
EC will publish the draft of update voters list by January 2, 2020.
“After scrutinising all the data, the list will be uploaded in (EC’s) main
server. To this end, there is reason to be worried about NID database,” he
added.
