JS committee recommends slashing import duty of granite

DHAKA, May 28, 2018 (BSS)-Parliamentary standing committee on the commerce ministry has recommended taking necessary measures to bring down the duty on the import of granite to a tolerable level.

The committee made the recommendation in its 26th meeting that discussed the activities of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), controlling the prices of essentials and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), said a media release.

The meeting also recommended the Cha Board (Tea Board) to take steps to set up testing lab and auction centres in small tea growing areas to protect the interest of the consumers.

About the prices of essential commodities, the meeting observed that the prices of gram, pulses, oil, sugar and other commodities have remained at tolerable level due to open marker sale of these products by TCB. At the beginning of Ramadan, the price of per kg gram was Tk 85 which is now at Tk 55, it said.

Committee chairman Md Tajul Islam Chowdhury presided over the meeting while members commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, Md Motahar Hossain, Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, Enamul Haque, Md Sanoar Hossain, Laila Arjuman Banu and mohammad Hasan Imam Khan attended the meeting.

Commerce secretary and officials concerned of the ministry and JS secretariat were present.
