Tightened security at 5,385 Puja mandaps in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, Sept 20, 2019 (BSS) – The law enforcement agencies have taken
tight security measures at all 5,385 mandaps in Rangpur division for ensuring
peaceful celebration of Durga Puja, the greatest religious festival of the
Sanaton community.

Authorities of different mandaps with assistance of local units of
Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad (BPUP) have erected 5,385 mandaps, including
164 mandaps under jurisdiction of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP), in
Rangpur division this year.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for Rangpur Range Devdas Bhattacharya has
directed all eight Police Supers for tightening security measures at all
5,221 mandaps in eight districts under Rangpur range for the Durga Puja
festivity.

He passed the direction at the ‘Law and Order Affairs Views-exchange
Meeting’ arranged at his conference room here on Thursday afternoon with
Police Supers and leaders of BPUP for peaceful celebration of the Sharodiyo
Durga Puja in the division.

“Special steps would be taken including deployment of police forces along
with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Highway Police, Ansar-VDP and
community police to ensure peaceful celebration of Durga Puja festivity,” he
said.

Talking to BSS today, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Abdul
Alim Mahmud said the Sanaton community will celebrate ‘Sharodiya’ Durga Puja
at 164 Puja mandaps erected at different places under jurisdiction of the
metropolis.

“We have taken adequate security steps to ensure peaceful celebrations of
the religious festivity in all Puja mandaps located under all six police
stations in the metropolis this year,” he added.

Meanwhile, erection of idols of goddess Durga continues in full swing and
preparations are afoot to celebrate the five-day religious festival of Durga
Puja from October 4 to October 8 next in the division.

Talking to BSS, Acting President of Rangpur district unit of BPUP Ajay
Prasad Babon said over 952 Durga Puja mandaps are being erected (including
RpMP area) across Rangpur district alone this year.

“Preparations are continuing in full swing amid huge enthusiasm to
celebrate the Durga Puja festivity with due religious gaiety in Rangpur city,
three municipalities and eight upazilas of the district,” Ajay said.

Beginning with the ‘Shosthi Puja’ from October 4 next, celebration of the
festival will end on October 8 next through Bijoya Dashami with immersion of
the idols of goddess Durga.

Talking to BSS today at different mandaps in Rangpur city, artisans Abhilas
Paul, Mukul Chandra and Manoranjan Paul said they are passing busiest time to
complete erection of the idols of goddess Durga with artistic fascination,
creativity and colours.

Artisan Nakul Roy, Shyamol Kumar Paul and Bhabotosh Paul said they began
erecting the idols of Mother Durga at 27 Puja Mandaps in the city adjoining
areas three weeks ago.

“We are now working round the clock to give finishing touches to the idols
of goddess Durga with different colours to give those more beautiful,
charming and aristocratic looks,” Nakul said.

Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) of Rangpur division Md Zakir
Hossain said adequate number of the law enforcement agencies would be
deployed to strengthen security for ensuring peaceful celebration of Durga
Puja in the district.
