World Ozone Day tomorrow

DHAKA, Sept 15, 2019 (BSS) – The World Ozone Day will be celebrated in the country as elsewhere in the world tomorrow with the theme ‘Montreal Protocol: 32 Years of Ozone Level Protection’.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion.

In their messages, both the president and the prime minister urged all to take concerted efforts to help protect ozone layer to save environment.

In his message, the President urged all to make tireless efforts to make the world livable for the future generation by saving the environment.

The President said awareness will increase among the people about the damages of ozone layer and harmful effects of climate changes through observing the day.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hoped that the Montreal Protocol will play a vital role to protect environment and awareness would be created in the country through the observance of the Ozone Day.

She said the Montreal Protocol is playing a remarkable role in the protection of the ozone layer as well as it is making a valuable contribution to the issue of climate change.

The President and the Prime Minister wished success of all programmes of the World Ozone Day.

Marking the day, a seminar and an art competition for children will be held at the Environment Building Auditorium in city’s Agargaon area tomorrow.

Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister M Shahab Uddin is expected to be present on the occasion as the chief guest while Environment Secretary Abdullah Al Mohsin Chowdhury will preside over the function.

Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar will also attend the programme as special guest.

The Montreal Protocol was signed in the Vienna Convention for the protection of the ozone layer on September 16, 1987 and it came into force on 1 January 1989.

Bangladesh has been observing the day since 1990 following signing of the protocol in the same year.
