Shakib’s performance matters most than captaincy: Khaled Mahmud

DHAKA, Sept 14, 2019 (BSS)- Former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud Sujon,
also a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director said that the performance of
Shakib Al Hasan would matter most for the team rather than his captaincy.

Sujon’s comment came on the wake of the latest debate, which the ace all-
rounder sparked after he publicly said that he is not interested in
captaincy.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon, however, said Shakib didn’t officially
showed his reluctance to lead the side.

“Shakib is one of the best captains in Bangladesh and no one can raise
question about his quality and cricket brain,” Sujon said here on Saturday.

“Without any argument, he is the best performer of the country and he has a
super cricket brain. And many believes he is more sharp than Mashrafe.”

“There will be a question mark if Shakib doesn’t want to lead the side. I
heard that Shakib said his performance will get better if he doesn’t have the
captaincy responsibility. We want Shakib’s performance and it matters most.
Shakib alone took all the onus in World Cup. And if he feels good, he can
give something to the country.”

Sujon also said that the BCB should take the matter seriously if Shakib is
reluctant to lead the side.

“You can say we have no captain at the moment to lead the side but I don’t
believe it. How do you know that we have no captain? You have to give someone
the responsibility and then you get the idea whether he fits for the
captaincy. We have 11 players in the national team. I think we should try him
as captain for adifferent format. Now, if Shakib wants to think about his
performance rather than captaincy, I think BCB should take the matter
seriously,” Sujon concluded.
