1.14 lakh people in Khulna get benefit of safety-net scheme

KHULNA, Sept 14, 2019 (BSS) – The government has expanded the social safety
net programme by bringing 1.14 lakh poor people of Khulna under the scheme
with a view to improving their living standard.

“We have allocated Taka 65.56 crore for poor people in the last 2018-19
financial year at nine upazilas of the district,” Deputy Director of
Department of Social Service (DSS) Khan Motahar Hossain told BSS.

Under the programme, the government has provided allowances to elderly poor
people, widows, divorced women, people with disabilities, distressed and poor
pregnant women, transgender, dalit (a marginal group) community and
financially-insolvent freedom fighters.

Besides, the government is also providing financial support for the poor
sick people especially who suffered from cancer, kidney, liver cirrhosis,
paralyses and heart diseases.

According to DSS, the government has allocated Taka 20.30 crore as old-aged
allowance for 67,874 people. Each of the beneficiaries will get Taka 500 per
month in the district.

A total of Taka 3.54 crore has been allocated for 23,600 widows or
repressed women. Each of them will get Taka 500 per month while 17,019
insolvent challenged people will get Taka 700 each from an allocation of Taka
7.12 crore.

The government has also allocated Taka 30.33 lakh for 1,339 physically-
challenged students, who need financial support for continuing studies.

Some specially designed programmes have been operated for the transgender
and dalit and communities as part of their rehabilitation.
