International Literacy Day observed in country

DHAKA, Sept 08, 2019 (BSS) – With a view to freeing the country from the
curse of illiteracy by implementing literacy and education development
programmes, the International Literacy Day-2019 was observed across the
country today with the theme ‘Literacy and Multilingualism’.

To mark the day, a colourful procession was brought out in Manikganj town
organized by district administration and Bureau of Informal Education.

A discussion was also held at the Martyrdom Freedom Fighters Memorial in
the town.

Fouzia Khan, DDLG, chaired the discussion addressed, among others, by Md
Moshiur Rahman Khan, ADC (Gen), Prof. Nurul Amin, Principal of Manikganj
Government Debendra College, Prof. Suchitra Rani Modok, Principal of
Manikganj Government Mohila College, Engineer Hafizur Rahman, Principal of
Government Technical School and College, Abdul Kader, Chairman of BHF and Md.
Farid Khan, executive director at PASA.

In Meherpur, a procession and a discussion were held in the district town
marking the day. The discussion was held at the conference room of the Deputy
Commissioner.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Ebadot Hossain presided over the meeting
spoken by the Deputy Commissioner Md Ataul Goni.

Associate Professor at Meherpur Government College Abdullah Al Amin
presented the key note paper in the discussion.

The International Literacy Day-2019 was also observed in Kushtia.

To mark the day, a procession was brought out from the Collectorate
Building that paraded different streets in the town participated by Police
Super SM Tanvir Arafat and Sadar Upazila Chairman Ataur Rahman Ata.

In Nilphamari, a colourful procession and a discussion meeting were
organised in the town by the district administration and Bureau of Informal
Education.

In Khulna, a discussion meeting was held at the conference room of the
Deputy Commissioner.

Deputy Commissioner Md Iqbal Hossain took part in the discussion as the
chief guest addressed, among others, by Additional Deputy Commissioner Golam
Minuddin Hassan, Education Officer Khandaker Ruhul Amin, Hiramon Kumar Biswas
and Momtaj Khatun.

A procession was also brought out from the Shahid Hadis Park in morning in
the town, marking the day.

The International Literacy Day was observed in Narail and Bogura.

The International Literacy Day is celebrated throughout the world marking
the 52nd anniversary of the World Congress of Ministers of Education on the
Eradication of Illiteracy, held in Tehran, Iran in 1965.

Following the Tehran recommendation, UNESCO proclaimed September 8th the
International Literacy Day.
