Afghanistan sniff victory after Tigers reduced to 102-4 at Tea

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 8, 2019 (BSS) – Skipper Rashid Khan and left-arm Chinaman Zahir Khan claimed two wickets apiece as Bangladesh was reduced to 102-4 at tea on the fourth day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here on Sunday.

With six wickets at hands, the Tigers still need 296 runs or survive four more sessions to avoid any kind of shambolic defeat to the Test cricket’s newest nation.

Opener Shadman Islam showed the composure to weather Afghan’s spin attack as he was not out on 39 after playing 101 balls before the second break of the day. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan was on 14.

But the other batsmen couldn’t apply them well in the face of some disciplined bowling attack of the Afghan spinners.

Liton Das and Shadman Islam made a steady start in the chase of 398 runs and went to lunch unscathed.

Left-arm Chinaman’s Zahir Khan struck first over after the lunch, beating Liton with his pace for 9 before removed Mosaddek Hossain for 12.

Rashid Khan who took 5-55 in the first innings, then took the prized scalp of Mushfiqur Rahim for 25, flummoxing him with a googly.

Rashid later spun sharply one past Mominul Haque to dismiss him for 3, leaving Bangladesh 82-4.

Shakib and Shadman saw off the session without any fuss then but they are left to uphill task to save the Test.

Afghanistan earlier added 23 runs to their overnight total to be all out for 260 in its second innings, setting 398-run target for Bangladesh on fourth day, which delayed to start by one hours and 45 minutes due to rain.
