International Literacy Day observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Sept 8, 2019 (BSS)- The International Literacy Day 2019 was observed here as elsewhere in the country today in a befitting manner with the specific call of attaining cent percent literacy for overall development of the country.

District Administration organised a colourful rally, discussion meeting and film show amidst huge public gathering in the city in observance of the day.

Starting from the premises of Monibazar, the rally marched through some of the city streets before being ended at Shilpakala Academy. A discussion meeting was held there highlighting significance of the day.

“Literacy and Multilingualism” is this year’s theme which means literacy in many languages will guarantee a better life.

Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Jakir Hossain addressed the meeting as the chief guest while retired Principal of Shahmukhdum Degree College Dr Tasiqul Islam spoke as focal person with Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Shariful Haque in the chair.

Dr Islam narrated the aspects of attaining total literacy and put forward a set of recommendations on how to achieve the cherished goal.

District Primary Education Officer Abdus Salam and Assistant Director of Bureau of Non-formal Education Anwar Kamal also spoke on the occasion.

Jakir Hossain identically said total literacy is the precondition to make people skillful human resources along with freeing the nation from unemployment problem.

He said primary teachers and social workers can play a vital role in gearing up the literacy campaign throughout the country to achieve the millennium development goals.

Hossain also stressed creating more awareness among the people to make the literacy campaign a success.

The discussion was followed by a film-show focusing on importance of literacy in the national and social life.
