EU sees no alternative to Brexit ‘backstop’
BRUSSELS, Sept 4, 2019 (BSS/AFP) – The European Union can see no alternative
to the so-called “Irish backstop” in a Brexit withdrawal deal to protect the
Northern Irish peace agreement and EU single market, it said Wednesday.
“The backstop… is the only solution identified that safeguards the Good
Friday Agreement, ensures compliance with international law obligations and
preserves the integrity of the internal market,” the European Commission said
in its latest Brexit planning document.
