Speakers for creating competitiveness in banking sector

DHAKA, Sept 03, 2019 (BSS) – Speakers at a seminar today urged the banks to bring technology based new products for creating competitiveness in the banking sector.

They made the call at a seminar on “Competition, Concentration and Banking Sector Stability” at Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) in the city, said a press release.

BIBM Executive Committee Chairman and Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank SM Moniruzzaman was present at the seminar as the chief guest while Professor and Director (RD&C) of BIBM Dr Prashanta Kumar Banerjee delivered the welcome address.

Former Faculty Member of BIBM Abdul Qayum Mohammad Kibriya presented a paper titled “Competition, Concentration and Banking Sector Stability” in the seminar.

Dr Muzaffer Ahmed chair professor of BIBM and former professor of Dhaka University Barkat-e-Khuda, executive director of Bangladesh Bank and director general of BIBM Md Nazimuddin, former managing director of Sonali Bank Limited S A Chowdhury, supernumerary professor of BIBM and former managing director of Pubali Bank Limited Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, former supernumerary professor of BIBM Md Yeasin Ali and president and managing director of Bank Asia Limited Md Arfan Ali, among others, were present.

SM Moniruzzaman said from the post liberation period till date, the central bank along with the government is working to strengthen the financial system. The Bangladesh Bank has initiated different laws and amended key sections in those laws to make the sector vibrant, he added.

He said banking industry of Bangladesh has become highly competitive in terms of so many parameters like number of banks, area of operation, access to credit, cost and quality of financial services and innovation.

“Competition can bring significant benefits to the market players, national economy and society. It also can be a source of potential instability due to the tendency of taking more risk,” he added.

Barkat-e-Khuda hoped the deliberations made in the seminar will be very helpful for all concerned.
