GAIBANDHA, Sept 3, 2019 (BSS) -Speakers at a function here unanimously underscored the need for changing the socio-economic condition of the transgender people through involving them in income generating activities.
“In this context, the training on different trades including sewing, beautification and computer can help the transgender people earn economical profit to change their living standard and be self-dependent as well”, they said.
They made the comments while addressing an inaugural session of 50-day training for the transgender people at the hall room of district social services office of the town on Monday.
Department of Social Services (DSS) has arranged the socio-economic training under the programme of Living Standard Improvement of Transgender Community.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin addressed the function as the chief guest while Deputy Director of DSS M. Emdadul Haque Pramanik in the chair.
Assistant director Kamrul Hasan Sarker, general secretary of Gaibandha Press Club Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman, and a transgender leader Mou Khatun addressed the inaugural session, among others while town social services officer Mizanur Rahman Mollick was the moderator.
The speakers said the members of the community are always subjected to negligence and repression in every sphere of life including family and society.
The society, as a whole, should come forward with a positive attitude towards the transgender people for their co-existence in society with decent livelihoods, they added.
DC Abdul Matin said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very much positive towards solving the problems of the transgender community and for this, the training programme has been arranged for them.
He also urged the transgender people to complete the training programme successfully and apply the acquired knowledge in income generating activities to earn money aimed at living in the society with dignity.
A total of 50 transgender people of seven upazilas of the district are taking part in the training.
