Medical waste management stressed for green Rangpur city

RANGPUR, Sept 1, 2019 (BSS) – Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa today laid emphasis on timely management and disposal of medical waste to prevent spread of many communicable diseases for building an eco-friendly, clean and green Rangpur city.

He made the observation at a function held at City Bhaban for launching of the Medical Waste Management program in the city jointly by Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) PRISM Bangladesh Foundation.

Member-secretary of Medical Waste Management Committee of RpCC and its Secretary Md. Rashedul Haque presided over function.

Executive Director of PRISM Bangladesh Foundation Khondker Anisur Rahman delivered welcome speech narrating importance of proper medical waste management for sound public health and better environment.

Director of Rangpur Medical College Hospital Dr. Sultan Ahmed, Assistant Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Divisional Director of the Department of Environment Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Medical Officer of RpCC Dr. Kamruzzaman Ibne Taz, General Secretary of Rangpur District Private Clinic Owners’ Association Shamsur Rahman Koyel, among others, addressed.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed said around 20 percent of medical waste could be perilous to cause infection and parasitic diseases which are preventable and treatable but remaining as primary causes of death globally.

“Late and improper disposal of healthcare waste could lead to public annoyance, bad odour and nastiness ultimately leading to spread of communicable diseases like cholera, hepatitis A, B and C, dysentery and other diseases,” he said.

Highly landing the initiative, Dr. Sirajul called for following proper disposal methods like waste minimisation, segregation, handling and storage, transportation, treatment and destruction and final disposal to avoid environmental pollution and health hazards.

Mostafa said the initiative would ensure proper medical waste disposal in Rangpur city to reduce possibility of contamination of land and water with chemicals, micro organisms and infestation of insects and rodents in local environment.

“The authorities of hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centres and other health service providing facilities should come forward to extend cooperation to make the Medical Waste Management program successful ” he said.
