‘All primary schools to be brought under midday meal coverage’

MAGURA, Aug 31, 2019 (BSS) – All primary schools would be brought under midday meal coverage in phases, Primary and Mass Education Secretary Md Akram-al-Hossain said today.

“Under school feeding policy, all primary schools will be brought under midday meal coverage for enhancing quality of education alongside improving nutritional status of children,” he told at the mother’s rally here.

Magura district primary education office organised the mother’s rally on “Development of moral values and ensuring of quality education.”

Director General of Directorate of Primary Education Dr AFM Manzur Qadir, Deputy Commissioner Md Ali Akbar, officials and representatives of local government bodies, among others, addressed the rally with district primary education officer Kumaresh Chnadra Gachir in the chair.

The secretary said library named “Bangabandhu Book Corner” will be set up at all primary schools beside construction of 60,000 new class rooms.

The Mass and Primary Education Ministry sources said the midday meal would have to meet 30 percent calories and 50 percent micronutrient of the primary school students aged 3 to 12 years.

As many as 1.40 crore students of 66,000 government primary schools across the country will be provided with midday meals by 2023 and it will require Taka 2,835 crore per year for giving fortified biscuits to the students, Taka 5,560 crore for giving cooked foods in five days and biscuits in one day and Taka 7,475 crore to give egg, banana and bread.
