40 mega projects become visible in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Aug 31, 2019 (BSS)- Implementation works of most of the 40 mega
projects in Rajshahi division have become visible creating high hope among
the public in general in terms of their living and livelihood improvement.

The 40 mega projects are being implemented involving over Tk 1,25,250 crore
in almost all eight districts under Rajshahi division, aiming to improve its
socio-economic condition at present.

Of these, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is being built on 990 acres of
land at Ishwardi in Pabna district.

Nur-Ur-Rahman, Commissioner of Rajshahi division, said the RNPP is being
implemented by the Russian Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation. Each
construction stage of the plant is closely being supervised both by the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Bangladesh Atomic Energy
Regulatory Authority (BAERA).

Upon successful implementation, 1200-megawatt power will be added to the
national grid from the first unit by 2023 while another 1200-megawatt from
the second unit by 2024.

The construction of Bangabandhu Silicon City (hi-tech park) is progressing
fast at a cost of Tk 238.25 crore on 31.63 acres of land in Rajshahi city.
Upon its successful completion, the park will create employment for more than
14,000 youths.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre is being constructed on 2.30
acres of land in Rajshahi metropolis at a cost of around Tk 92.30 crore. The
project is scheduled to end by June 2020.

A 200-bed Rajshahi Shishu Hospital is being constructed on 2.44 acres of
land in Rajshahi city with an investment of Tk 32 crore.

Rajshahi Medical University will be established on 85.80 acres of land
with an estimated cost of Tk 1,500 crore (first phase by June 2022).

Northern Electric Supply Company (NESCO) Limited has been implementing a
mega project aiming at enhancing the power production capacity to meet the
growing demand of power in the region besides attaining the ultimate goal of
creating regional balance in power production.

The four and half year project titled “Rajshahi Division Distribution line
and Substation Extension and Rehabilitation” is being implemented in Rajshahi
City Corporation and 21 Upazilas.

The Taka 1091.32-crore project will increase the capacity by 470 MVA side
by side with providing 2.35 lakh new power connections upon its successful
implementation by June 2022.

Around sixty percent work of a project titled “Power Distribution
Management Development Project in Rajshahi Zone” was completed by last June.
Power Development Board is implementing the project with an estimated cost of
around Tk 915 crore.

Department of Roads and Highways has been implementing seven projects
costing around Tk 2,136.37 crore. On average, 30 percent work on the projects
was completed.

Northwest Zone of Bangladesh Water Development Board is implementing eight
mega schemes with estimated cost of Tk 2,260.14 crore.

Also, the West Zone of Bangladesh Railway has been implementing four
projects with an estimated cost of around Tk 1,829.76 crore.

Upon successful implementation, the projects will contribute a lot to
improving living and livelihood condition of the public in general, expected
