15th anniversary of grenade attack observed in city

DHAKA, Aug 21, 2019 (BSS) – Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations today observed the 15th anniversary of the grisly August 21 grenade attack on Awami League(AL) rally in Dhaka amid various programmes.

Marking the day, the ruling AL, its associate bodies and other political parties, socio-cultural and professional organisations chalked out different programmes across the country.

On the same day, AL organized a discussion meeting at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh Auditorium in the capital.

The premier, Sheikh Hasina, presided over the meeting.

The day’s programme started with placing wreaths at the temporary memorial at Bangabandhu Avenue to pay rich tributes to the memories of those who were killed in the attack.

On behalf of AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader laid floral wreath at the altar of the memorial to initiate the day’s programme and other leaders of several political parties followed him.

After laying wreaths, all leaders stood in solemn silence in memory of the martyrs of the gruesome attack.

AL advisory council members Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed and Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, presidium members Matia Chowdhury, Mohammed Nasim, Kazi Zafarullah and Advocate Sahara Khatun, Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzak, AL Joint General Secretaries Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, its Organizing Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Publicity and Publication Affairs Secretary and Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud were present on the occasion.

Besides, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem, AL Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi and Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua also joined them.

Moreover, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) President Hasanul Haque Inu and Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua paid tributes to the martyrs of the incident.

On August 21 back in 2004, during the rule of BNP-Jamaat alliance government, one of the most barbaric attacks in the country’s history was carried out under a design to eliminate leadership of Awami League (AL), the largest political party which brought the country’s independence under the great leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
