4.5 metric tones fish fries released in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Aug 20, 2019 (BSS)- Department of Fisheries has released 4.5
metric tones of fish fries and fingerlings in open water bodies in the
district during the current monsoon aims at boosting the fish production.

District Fisheries Officer Alok Kumar Shaha revealed this while
addressing a fish fry releasing ceremony at Harian area under Paba Upazila in
the district yesterday afternoon.

He also told the meeting that fish demonstration farm on 8.5 hectares
and Beel nursery on three hectares will be established side by side with fish
habitat development on five hectares in the current 2019-20 fiscal year.

Around 2,200 fishermen, fish farmers and other entrepreneurs will be
benefited from the promotional activities.

Ayen Uddin, MP, addressed the ceremony as chief guest while Upazila
Chairman Monsur Rahman, Katakhali Pourasava Mayor Abbas Ali, Senior Upazila
Fisheries Officer Abu Bakkar Siddique and Youth Development Officer Sayed Ali
Reja spoke as special guests.

On the occasion, 350 kilograms of fish fries were released at separate
six points of a two-kilometer re-excavated canal area from Jagirpara to Digor
Beel. Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) re-excavated 12
kilometer derelict canal in the area.

In his remarks, Lawmaker Ayen Uddin said enhanced fish production can be
the effective means to meet protein deficiency and poverty alleviation along
employment generation.

Referring to the immense prospect of the fisheries sector he said fish
production could easily be increased through the best use of existing natural
resources.

Conservation of the water resources and other wetlands has become
indispensable for the sake of boosting fish production to meet up the
national protein demands, he added.

Ayen Uddin called for involving more people in the fish farming
activities for the sake of meeting the protein demands as only the fish
fulfill at least 60 per cent need of the animal protein especially of the
poor and marginal communities.
