RAJSHAHI, Aug 20, 2019 (BSS)- Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has taken decision of bringing all auto-rickshaws and charger rickshaws under registration aims at restoring discipline in vehicular movement side by side with removing traffic jam on the city streets.

The decision was taken in a view-sharing meeting with all stakeholders at the city bhaban mini-conference hall here Monday afternoon.

The meeting asked the owners and drivers concerned to submit application in all the 30 ward councilor offices and the city bhaban booths for the registration by end of this month. RCC has already formulated a policy on plying of the three wheelers in a disciplined manner and all sorts of necessary preparations to execute the policy effectively were already completed.

RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the meeting as chief guest with its Panel Mayor Shariful Islam Babu in the chair.

Ward Councilors Nizam-Ul Azim and Nazrul Islam, Chief Executive Officer Shawgatul Alam, Chief Revenue Officer Shahana Akhter Jahan and Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Anirban Chakma also spoke. The meeting also decided that the unlicensed six-seated auto-rickshaws and two-seated charger rickshaws will be confiscated from October 1.

Speaking on the occasion, the mayor said the system will bring discipline to the city’s public transport system and lessen public sufferings. Besides, it will ensure security for the auto-rickshaw drivers. The mayor urged the auto-rickshaw drivers to comply with the city corporation decision side by side with abiding by the existing traffic rules to ensure public safety.

He also said smart cards will be distributed among owners and drivers of 10,000 auto-rickshaw and 5,000 charger rickshaws for their proper identification. Under the new system, the auto-rickshaws marked with two separate colours will ply on the roads in two shifts — one from morning to afternoon and another from afternoon to early night — by rotation. This will reduce the overall traffic jam in the city streets.

Earlier on July 1 last, Rajshahi City Corporation has launched smart auto-rickshaw management system for the first time in the country aimed at reducing traffic congestion on the roads.
