GAIBANDHA, August 18, 2019 (BSS) – Breach closing of flood control embankments have been progressing fast since couple of weeks in Gaibandha district.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) is implementing the works under its emergency response work, official sources said.

A total of 37 portions of flood control dyke of the district were washed away last month due to the current of the water of the Brahmaputra and the Ghagot rivers, the sources said.

As a result, the water of the rivers entered the main land of the district including Gaibandha town creating innumerable sufferings of the people.

Crops, fishes, and roads and bridges were washed away and infrastructures of the institutions were also damaged due to the devastating flood this year.

With the recession of flood water, the BWDB took the initiatives to close the breached portions of the embankment so that the flood water could not enter the mainland from the rivers further.

On Saturday, chief engineer of BWDB Jyoti Prosad Ghosh visited a number of sites including Godarhat, Kaiyarhat and Ketkirhat here and witnessed the progress of breach closing.

Talking to the BSS, executive engineer of BWDB Mokhlasur Rahman said average 60 percent works had already been completed and the rest work would be finished very soon.
