Tiger’s consistent rise makes high profile coaches interested: Papon

DHAKA, August 17, 2019 (BSS) – The overwhelming response for applying for the post of Bangladesh national cricket team’s head coach came as a pleasing experience for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) who in the past had to sweat hard to hire a quality foreign coach.

Even, after the departure of Chandika Hathurusingha, Bangladesh had to wait almost one year to get the service of Steve Rhodes. And to bring Rhodes here they had to hire Gary Kirsten as the advisor to appoint a coach for Bangladesh.

The BCB had recently parted ways with Rhodes following a poor result in the 2019 World Cup but got his successor in Russell Domingo in just two months.

The BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon said the reason behind getting the coach so quickly is the team’s continuous rise in the International cricket. And more over the next World Cup will be held in India, in which most of the cricket pundits believe Bangladesh will be one of the favourites.

“We all know Bangladesh is playing better than before. And after having conversation with all of the coaches, what we realized is that, they believe that Bangladesh is truly a potential team,” Papon said here on Saturday.

“For example, when I asked Domingo why he wants to come to Bangladesh when he is already working with South Africa… and he said that, it has become so tough for other teams to win in Bangladesh. He said that Bangladesh is a big force in sub-continent. The upcoming World Cup is going to be hosted in sub-continent. He believes, Bangladesh should be one of the contenders, so if there is any team after India that will be Bangladesh. As both team has the same mentality.”

“Another thing that they considered is that, we already have some world class players and a good pipeline. And it’s true we have potential players in our pipeline but we are not giving them proper chance. If those new players don’t get enough matches to play, they won’t play better in bigger stage.”

Papon said the coaches also pointed out Bangladesh aged level team’s success in various foreign condition.

“And for the first time, Under-19, A team and HP team played together against foreign teams after which we have understood their strength. We did not play well against Afghanistan but the rest two teams played well. So we have so many potential players.”

“We have to provide them proper chances. And the teams might rest some players. But that does not mean we are dropping him permanently. We have discussed a lot about rotation policy with these coaches. We will work on rotation policy and introduce some new faces. We decided to introduce them with Tests but now we prefer T20s more than Tests to include new players. So I hope we will see new players very soon,” he concluded.
