Eminent litterateur Rizia Rahman passed away

DHAKA, Aug 16, 2019 (BSS) – Eminent litterateur and Ekushey Padak winner
Rizia Rahman today died while undergoing treatment in a city hospital.

She was 79.

Rizia Rahman was suffering from a number of ailments including cancer and
kidney diseases and breathed her last at Apollo Hospital in the city this
morning.

She was born on December 28, 1939 in Kolkata and later migrated to the
then East Bengal after the Partition of India in 1947 with her family.

The Ekushey Padak-winning writer started literary works since 60s. She
wrote short stories, poems, essays and children’s fiction but she was
primarily noted as a novelist.

Rizia Rahman received an array of prestigious awards including Ekushey
Padak in 2019 and Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1978 for her contribution
in literature.

Some of Rizia’s acclaimed works included Ghar-Bhanga-Ghar, Uttar Purush,
Rokter Okshor, Bong Theke Bangla, Dhabal Jyosna, Sheeta Pahar, and Utshey
Fera, etc.

Later, state minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid expressed deep shock
at the death of Rizia Rahman.

He said Rizia Rahman, a writer, story teller and novelist, had an
outstanding contribution to all field of literature including comics,
stories, poetry and children’s literature.

“The death of the renowned litterateur is an irreparable loss in the
country’s literature and people will remember her for her great contributions
in Bangla language and literature,” the state minister added.
