First death anniversary of journalist Golam Sarwar Tuesday

DHAKA, Aug 10, 2019 (BSS) – First death anniversary of eminent journalist and former editor of daily Samakal Golam Sarwar will be observed on Tuesday.

On August 13 in 2018, the veteran journalist died while undergoing treatment at the Singapore General Hospital at the age of 75.

Different organizations, family members and Bangla daily Samakal will arrange different programmes to commemorate the death of Golam Sarwar.

The programmes include doa and milad mahfil at Sarwar’s Uttara residence in Dhaka and his birth place at Banaripara in Barishal district on that day.

After the holidays of Eid-ul-Azha, the Dainik Samakal and the Golam Sarwar Foundation will jointly organize a memorial meeting marking the death anniversary of the eminent journalist.

Born on April 1 in 1943, Sarwar started his career in his student life in 1962 as a university correspondent for The Azadi.

He also joined The Sangbad as a sub-editor. After the Independence of Bangladesh in 1971, he served as the headmaster of Banaripara Union Institution.

Later in 1972, he joined The Daily Ittefaq as a senior sub-editor and worked for the newspaper until 1999.

In 1999, Sarwar became the founding editor of Jugantor. He also joined Samakal as the founding editor in 2005 and served as the editor at the newspaper until his death.

Sarwar had served as the chairman of the board of directors of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) since August 2015.

He was the founding president Editors’ Council, an association of newspapers editors.

He was a member of the Bangladesh Film Censor Board’s Appellate Division and had worked as a senior vice-president of the National Press Club several times.

Sarwar was awarded the Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh in 2014.
