Rains disrupt cattle market in capital
DHAKA, Aug 8, 2019 (BSS) – Although two days are left for the holy Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of Muslims, cattle markets are yet to get momentum in the capital due to continuous rains.
While visiting different cattle markets, including makeshift markets in Kamlapur, Khilgaon and Shahjahanpur, this correspondent found a poor number of buyers in these markets despite having adequate sacrificial animals.
Sellers said there are adequate local cattle in the markets, but the presence of buyers is insignificant as rains forced them to stay home today resulting in poor sale of sacrificial animals.
Talking to this correspondent at Uttar Sahjahanpur market, cattle trader Nasmul Hossain Sarkar of Sirajganj said a very few number of buyers came to cattle markets today due to rains. “Those who came to the markets today did not show interest to buy animals. They were just choosing sacrificial animals,” he added.
Another trader Monir Uddin at a makeshift market set up outside Kamalapur Stadium hoped that the sale of sacrificial animals would begin in full swing from Friday.
Market insiders said cattle had started entering city markets. Traders and farmers are coming to city cattle markets with their animals from different parts of the country, including Kurigram, Jamalpur, Madaripur, Rajbari, Sirajganj, Jashore, Dinajpur and Rangpur aiming to get higher price of these sacrificial animals.
A total of 24 permanent and makeshift cattle markets began in the capital today, which will continue till one day before Eid-ul-Azha to be celebrated on Monday.
Around 2,362 cattle markets have been set up across the country ahead of the Eid.
In two Dhaka city corporations, one permanent and 23 makeshift markets were set up. Of those, 10 were set up in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) area while 14 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area.
