Kolkata dy mayor for elimination of mosquito breeding grounds to check dengue

DHAKA, Aug 5, 2019 (BSS) – Destruction of mosquito breeding grounds is far better than applying insecticides for preventing dengue, which is spread by aedes mosquitoes, said Deputy Mayor of Kolkata Atin Ghosh in a video conference today.

Kolkata deputy mayor came up with these observation while he was talking to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor M Atiqul Islam at his Nagar Bhaban office at Gulshan from Kolkata municipality at around 2.45pm.

“The Kolkata Municipality is combating the menace, both by preventive and curative measures and added that the Kolkata municipality is carrying out a three-tiered monitoring system to check dengue since 2009,” said the deputy mayor.

To check dengue, the deputy mayor said monitoring and people’s awareness were continuously carried out in Kolkata round the year. “Destruction of the breeding places is being done after locating the residences and open places chanting the slogan ‘destroy the mosquitoes at its source,” he said.

The deputy mayor asked the DNCC mayor to identify the dengue prone area and then take an effective action plan. Kolkata is now free from dengue which has been possible after a long nine year effort by the Kolkata Municipality, the deputy mayor explained. The DNCC mayor thanked the Kolkata deputy mayor and said it is a first time knowledge sharing with Kolkata, but not the last.

Local Government Division secretary Helaluddin Ahmed, Director General of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)M Khalilur Rahman, DNCC’s Chief Executive Officer M Abdul Hai, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Mominur Rahman Mamun, Entomologist Dr Monjur Ahmed Chowdhury, Kolkata Municipality’s Chief Vector Control Officer Dr Debashish Biswas, Chief Health Officer Dr Monirul Islam, Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Subrata Roy Chowdhury, Chief Consultant (health) DR Tapan Mukherjee, among others, attended the video conference.
